The Suparskim® principle

Fixed Suparskim® skimmer.Suparskim® skimmers are designed to take off the top layer from the medium in a tank, bath or pit. They are not an oil separation device by themselves but are an essential component in the Skim & Treat method. Suparskim® skimmers come in fixed-mounted and floating versions to accommodate for any level variation.

The purpose of the Suparskim® skimmer.

The variety in oil/water separation applications is enormous. Not only in the nature of the oil/water mixture, but also in the variations in shape, size and dimensions of the installations the mixture is to be found or treated. Washers, cleaning baths, coolant sumps, API separators, sewer systems etc..

To connect to this variety of installations in the right way, flexibility is a key issue. Suparskim® provides this flexibility. Typically one of the many Suparskim® models is mounted inside the tank, bath, pit or other and takes out the oil/water mixture for further processing.

Suparskim® skimmers support optimal separation performance and eliminate problems with floating layers from oil, grease or other light substances. By continuously removing the top layer from a bath or tank, and separating the oil from this fluid, an optimal result is achieved. Floating layers can no longer be formed; Suparskim® skimmers don't even leave an oil film behind!


The Suparskim® principle.

The Suparskim® principle.Suparskim® skimmers make use of a simple and reliable principle.

  1. The Suparskim® skimmer is installed in the tank with the aqueous medium.
  2. If the level rises above the nose of the skimmer, the medium will flow into the skimmer trough.......
  3. ...... causing the level inside the trough to rise
  4. The rising level will cause the trough to tilt backwards, reducing the incoming flow.
  5. The medium inside the skimmer trough is taken out, either by gravity of with a pump, ........
  6. ...... causing the level inside the trough to drop.
  7. The dropping level will cause the skimmer trough to tilt forward, increasing the incoming flow.

The effect of this mechanism is that the skimmer will find a steady position where the flow into the trough equals the flow taken out. Only fluctuation in the level or in the flow out ot the trough will cause the skimmer to change its position. As long as the level is within the range of the skimmer, the surface layer from the tank or bath will run off into the skimmer trough.


Fixed Suparskim® skimmers.

In the above sketches, the Suparskim® skimmer is mounted in a tank at a fixed height. It will follow the liquid level as long as it is within the range of the skimmer, indicated by the dotted lines. For fixed skimmers the maximum level variation that currently can be handled is 160mm. If the level variation is more than 160mm, a floating Suparskim® skimmer must be used.

Floating Suparskim® skimmers.

Floating Suparskim® skimmer.For level variations beyond 160 mm, floating type Suparskim® skimmers are used. Floating Suparskim® skimmer have the same tilting skimming trough with one or more floats connected to it. A floating Suparskim® skimmer is connected to a coupling in the wall, or a rigid pipe running into the tank, with a flexible hose. The maximum level variation possible with a floating Suparskim® skimmer is determined by the length of the flexible hose.
